God, in His mercy, foresaw our need for encouragement during our illness. To meet this need, God provided an abundance of bible verses about healing sickness to remind us of His love and care.

These biblical promises both comfort our hearts and prepare our minds to receive God’s healing.

The psalmist expresses this truth thus:

“This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life.” (Psalm 119:50 ESV)

Christ spent more time healing than preaching during His earthly ministry. He healed more than He preached because He desired to bring relief and restoration to those suffering from disease.

Christ assured His followers that He “came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10 ESV).

He made this promise because He desired the restoration of his disciples then and in the future.

God’s abundant life offer includes the restoration of the whole person. His original design for man included the restoration of the body, mind, and spirit.

In his closing remarks, the apostle Paul wishes the Thessalonians:

“Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:23 ESV)

True, God is the One who sanctifies and keeps our bodies, minds, and spirits blameless until the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the One who sets us apart for a holy life and looks after our physical, mental, and spiritual health.

There is healing and protection in God’s word.

2. Psalm 119:50 BSB

“This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life.”

Bible Verses About the Causes of Sickness

What does the Bible say about the cause of sickness? According to the Bible, sickness can be caused by any of the following:

1. Sickness may occur as a result of God’s judgment

Disobedience to God results in punishment, which can include sickness. Paul, for example, warned the Christians in Corinth that mishandling the holy communion could lead to sickness (1 Corinthians 11:30). As a result of God’s judgment, Miriam the prophetess contracted leprosy (Numbers 12:9-10). According to Acts 12:23, King Herod had leprosy as well.

2. Our sinful, fallen natures are the source of sickness

Adam and Eve’s original sin, as well as the curse that followed their disobedience, are the primary causes of sickness (Romans 5:12).

3. Poor personal hygiene can lead to sickness

The Bible contains many laws concerning ceremonial cleanliness. However, some personal hygiene instructions are included in these ceremonial laws. In Leviticus 15:13, for example, a man with some bodily discharge is instructed to “wash his clothes and bathe his body in running water and will become clean.”

4. Bad lifestyle choices can lead to sickness

Our preferences and choices may violate natural laws and cause illness. Neglecting one’s health by not exercising or eating healthy foods is defying nature’s laws. Our eating habits may cause diseases, which is why God enacted health laws such as the prohibition against eating the flesh of animals that died of mysterious diseases (Leviticus 22:8; Exodus 22:31).

5. Sickness is also caused by the devil

The Bible also teaches that sickness is caused by the devil. For example, in Luke’s gospel, Christ heals a woman who has been “bound” by Satan for “eighteen years” (Luke 13:11-16 ). Another example is the story of Gerasene’s demon-possessed man (Matthew 8:28-34, Luke 8:26-39, Mark 5:1- 20).

6. It is possible for forces beyond our control to cause illness

Sickness may be the result of a deeper spiritual conflict than any of our faults. Job’s story is an example of a “blameless and upright” individual who was confronted by evil forces (Job 1:1).

7. Some illnesses may occur in order to glorify God through healing

When one of Christ’s disciples saw a blind man, he asked, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” Jesus replied, “but this happened in order for God’s works to be displayed in him” (John 9:2-3, BSB). Sickness, according to the Bible, can bring us closer to God (Psalm 119:71; Psalm 119:67).

8. Sickness can result from physical exhaustion

For example, Elijah the prophet became so exhausted that he contemplated suicide at one point. Elijah probably became depressed as a result of exhaustion and suicidal thoughts. (See 1 Kings 19:1-4 for details.)
